300 Nigerians Murdered for Blasphemy Since 1999 and Not a Single Conviction: Deborah Emmanuels Killers Still Walk Free

Truth Nigeria Marks Four Years Since Sokoto Christian Student Was Stoned and Burned for a Whatsapp Message About Jesus

On the fourth anniversary of the mob lynching of Christian student Deborah Emmanuel in Sokoto, Truth Nigeria has documented the staggering scale of impunity for blasphemy related killings in Nigeria. Since 1999, mobs have executed approximately 300 Nigerians for alleged blasphemy. The number of convictions: zero.

Deborah Emmanuel was stoned to death by a mob at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto on 12 May 2022 over a WhatsApp message thanking Jesus.

Major Nigerian outlets initially misidentified her as "Deborah Samuel" until independent reporting corrected the record through family verification. Two suspects were arrested.

The police prosecutor failed to appear at multiple hearings. A magistrate dismissed the case in January 2023 ruling continued adjournment "unjust." As of May 2026, no active investigation or court proceedings exist.

Dede Laugesen, CEO of Save the Persecuted Christians, summed up the situation in one sentence: "To be female and a Christian in Nigeria puts a target on your back." Reverend Joseph Hayab, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria for 19 northern states, explained the dynamic: "Documented freedom" exists in Nigerian law, but "someone can just wake up and raise a false alarm, and mobs will come after you." US Deputy Assistant Secretary Jacob McGee acknowledged the case in congressional testimony. No US sanctions have ever been imposed.

The Crusader's Opinion

Deborah Emmanuel was a young Christian woman who praised her Saviour on WhatsApp. She was stoned to death by a mob at her own college. Four years later her killers roam free. Three hundred Nigerians have died the same way since 1999, and not one perpetrator has faced justice. The Tinubu government tolerates this because blasphemy lynchings are politically untouchable in northern Nigeria. The West tolerates it because Nigeria is "strategically important." Deborah's family knows the truth. The blood of the martyrs cries from the ground. Western Christians must finally stop tolerating Nigerian impunity.
