Fulani Militia Storm Christian Village in Bauchi, Nigeria: Soldiers Killed, Families Flee in Terror

On February 22, 2026, more than 100 heavily armed Fulani ethnic militia riding motorcycles launched a coordinated assault on a majority Christian farm village in Gwana District, Alkaleri County, Bauchi State, roughly 290 miles northeast of Abuja, Nigeria.

The attackers struck a military base and surrounding villages almost simultaneously, killing two soldiers, a local vigilante, and a civilian. Several residents were abducted, and within hours, entire communities began fleeing toward the neighboring states of Gombe, Plateau, and Adamawa, seeking refuge in schools, churches, and private homes.

Village survivor Daudu Said told TruthNigeria that the attackers specifically targeted Christians, asking for "infidels" when they entered the community.

They are Fulanis. They come on motorcycles with heavy weapons. They asked for infidels, for Christians.

Homes were burned and farmlands abandoned as terrified families loaded household items onto vehicles and motorcycles to escape. Community leaders say predominantly Christian villages in southern Bauchi, including areas of Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro, have experienced repeated attacks over the past year.

In August 2025, gunmen killed a Christian farmer in Gumel village, Tafawa Balewa. A Zaar tribal leader later condemned the killing of another Christian, Mr. Irmiya Yohanna, on his farm in neighboring Bogoro County.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed warned that as many as 10,000 Fulani fighters may be operating within the state and visited displaced communities, describing the situation as far beyond routine banditry.

Washington based analyst Scott Morgan told TruthNigeria that while organized armed groups in Bauchi are undeniable, the governor's estimate of 10,000 fighters should be treated cautiously.

If 10,000 fighters were involved and only three people were kidnapped, that is an underwhelming outcome.

Amnesty International warned that Nigeria's deepening insecurity is "getting out of hand" following the deadly attack on Gwana District.

Washington's Nigeria Strategy Faces Reality Check as Fulani Ethnic Militia Terrorize Bauchi Christians

The violence reflects a growing fear across parts of Bauchi that these attacks carry ethnic and religious undertones far deeper than the "banditry" label authorities frequently assign. Local survivors allege that attacks are systematic, targeting Christian farming communities with the goal of permanent displacement.

U.S. counterterrorism policy in Nigeria has traditionally centered on Boko Haram and ISIS affiliated groups in the northeast. But experts now argue Washington must reckon with the decentralized Fulani militia threat, which has killed more Nigerian Christians than Boko Haram in recent years.

If Washington is recalibrating its Nigeria strategy, Bauchi may become a test case for whether U.S. counterterrorism doctrine can adapt beyond the familiar architecture of Boko Haram and confront a more diffuse, locally rooted, but increasingly lethal threat.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let us call this what it is: ethnic cleansing of Christians on African soil while the world watches in comfortable silence. Over 100 armed men on motorcycles stormed a Christian village asking for "infidels," and Washington's response is to debate whether this fits neatly into its Boko Haram playbook. It does not. These are our brothers and sisters in Christ being hunted, burned out of their homes, and slaughtered for their faith. If 100 armed Christians stormed a Muslim village anywhere on Earth, every government, every media outlet, and every international body would declare it a genocide before sundown. The hypocrisy is deafening. Governor Mohammed says 10,000 militia fighters roam his state freely. That is not banditry. That is an army of evil operating with impunity, and every day the world stays silent, more innocent blood cries out from the soil of Nigeria.
