Fulani Militia Create "Killing Zones" Across Benue State, Driving Christians From Ancestral Homes

Armed Muslim Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM) have established what local residents describe as a "Terrorist Triangle" across three counties in Nigeria's Benue State, systematically driving Christian communities from their ancestral lands through coordinated violence, murder, and territorial occupation.

Residents of Apa, Agatu, and Gwer West counties say the attackers are heavily armed, launching sustained campaigns of displacement and slaughter across their predominantly Christian farming communities. Benue State is 98 percent Christian, chiefly Catholic, and is known as Nigeria's "food basket" due to its agricultural output.

The militia have seized territory in communities including Imana, Okwuji, Ikobi, Inyapu, Olegogba, Asaba, and Akpete in Apa County, Ogbaulu and Odejo in Agatu County, and Sengev Gbaji Forest in Gwer West County. Survivors allege the attackers occupy vacated land and hoist Islamic flags after driving out Christian inhabitants.

Our people have been in this trouble for the past two and a half years. Many have left their ancestral homes and are now living here without shelter, food, schools or medical care.

Those are the words of Ebi Lucky, National Youth President of the Agatu West Peace and Unity Forum, who led hundreds of protesters in a highway blockade on the Oweto Otukpo road on March 15, 2026.

Over 200 internally displaced persons are currently sheltering in makeshift huts along the Oweto River, with no government assistance. More than 15 villages in Agatu West alone have been overrun by armed herders since 2013.

Mercy Danladi, a displaced woman from Ochelefu village, has lost her husband, sister, and cousin in separate attacks spanning from 2013 to 2025. She appealed directly to the Federal Government for security intervention.

Our people are dying almost on a daily basis.

That grim assessment came from Dandy Adoba, National Secretary of the Agatu West Peace and Unity Forum, who criticized the inadequate deployment of security forces in the region.

In the deadliest recent incident, at least 22 Christians were killed in coordinated assaults on March 5, 2026, when heavily armed Fulani jihadists attacked multiple communities while reportedly speaking Fulfulde and shouting "Allahu Akbar." A Youth Volunteer commander was shot and killed while attempting to repel the assault. Over 1 million Christians, mostly Catholics, have now been displaced from their ancestral homes across Benue State.

Nigerian Christians in Benue State Demand Right to Self Defense as Fulani Attacks Escalate

Mass burial held for victims of Fulani herdsmen attack in Jato Aka, Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State, March 2026

Community leaders have begun calling for the right to arm local youths for self defense, stating that the military and security agencies have failed to protect them. A mass burial was held on March 20, 2026 in Jato Aka, Kwande Local Government Area, for 13 victims of the March 5 attacks on Mbachom and Mbaav communities. The burial had previously been blocked when local officials allegedly had a mortician abducted to prevent the ceremony while U.S. humanitarian visitors were present.

Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has warned authorities against using permanent resettlement as a solution, demanding instead that displaced persons be returned to their ancestral homes with proper security.

The Crusader's Opinion

Over one million Christians ethnically cleansed from their ancestral homes. Thousands murdered. Islamic flags raised over seized Christian farmland. And what does the world say? Nothing. What does the Nigerian government do? They send officials to block mass burials so foreign visitors won't see the bodies. Let that sink in. These are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and their government is literally hiding their corpses. If armed Christian militias were seizing Muslim villages anywhere on earth, the United Nations would convene an emergency session within hours. The hypocrisy is deafening. Benue State is 98 percent Christian. These people are not combatants. They are farmers, mothers, children. And they are being exterminated in a slow motion genocide while the world looks the other way.
