UK Creates Special Shield for Islam While Christians Face Prosecution for Praying and Quoting Scripture
UK adopts anti Muslim hostility definition as Christian leaders warn vague language could criminalize evangelism and silence Gospel preaching across Britain.
UK Government Adopts New Anti Muslim Hostility Definition as Christians Warn It Could Silence the Gospel
The UK government has officially adopted a new non statutory definition of "anti Muslim hostility" as part of its sweeping social cohesion action plan titled "Protecting What Matters." Communities Secretary Steve Reed announced the measures on March 9, 2026, in Parliament.
The definition covers "intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts including acts of violence, vandalism, harassment, or intimidation that are directed at Muslims because of their religion." It also includes "prejudicial stereotyping" and treating Muslims as a group "defined by fixed and negative characteristics."
The broader plan calls for a "patriotic renewal" of English communities, with Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy describing it as "a driving mission for this government." Measures include restoring pride in local areas, celebrating faith communities, and directing £5.8 billion to over 300 constituencies.
However, Christian leaders have raised immediate alarm over the definition's vague language and its potential to silence legitimate religious speech.
Tim Dieppe, head of public policy at Christian Concern, told Premier Christian News that "hostility" was too broad a term, open to abuse and "two tier policing."
"If I say Muslims do not worship the same God as Christians, that could be deemed to be prejudicial stereotyping intended to stir up hatred, and then I would be fully foul of this definition."
Christian commentator Adrian Hilton warned that "to write or say that Mohammed is a false prophet is easily perceived as harassment or intimidation directed at Muslims because of their religion."
David Robertson added bluntly that "preaching Christ and his word is not hatred, nor is it any kind of phobia."
Even the government's own anti terrorism reviewer, Jonathan Hall KC, questioned whether organizations would have "the strength and inclination to resist becoming organs of self censorship."
Baroness Falkner, former chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, called the definition "a two tier policy" and "the enemy of equality."
The Christian Institute pledged to hold the government accountable to its free speech assurances, while Ciarán Kelly, the Institute's director, warned that "the vague language still makes it more likely that criticism of, and opposition to, Islam will be presented as prejudice."
Will the UK's New Hostility Definition Criminalize Christian Evangelism and Gospel Preaching?

Steve Reed insisted there is "absolutely no question of blasphemy laws by the back door." But the Evangelical Alliance's head of public policy, Alicia Edmund, countered that "Christians sharing about Jesus and His teachings with other minorities is not hate speech."
Hindu Council UK Director Dipen Rajyaguru wrote directly to Steve Reed calling the proposal "deeply flawed," warning it "risks serious unintended consequences" and arguing that "a plural, democratic society must protect people from harm and not protect ideas from criticism."
The Crusader's Opinion
Let us be perfectly clear about what is happening here. The British government has just created a special legal shield for one religion while Christians across the United Kingdom can be arrested for praying silently outside abortion clinics, fired for wearing crosses, and hauled into court for quoting Scripture. This is not social cohesion. This is state sponsored theological censorship dressed in the language of tolerance.
Try building a church in Saudi Arabia. Try preaching the Gospel in Pakistan. Try converting from Islam in Iran. Christians know what real hostility looks like because they are being martyred for their faith every single day in Muslim majority nations. And now the UK government wants to make it a thought crime to point that out?
If saying "Jesus is the only way to the Father" can be classified as "prejudicial stereotyping," then this definition is not about protecting Muslims. It is about silencing Christians. The West must wake up before it legislates its own faith into extinction.
