A new report by the Swiss Federal Council, adopted on April 1, 2026, has concluded that privately hosting Ukrainian refugees produced generally positive integration outcomes. The study found that refugees who stayed with host families were better able to navigate daily life in Switzerland.

The report identified positive trends across social, linguistic, cultural, and professional dimensions for refugees placed in private homes rather than state facilities.

The Swiss Evangelical Alliance (SEA) welcomed the findings, noting that churches within its network led many of the earliest housing initiatives after Russia invaded Ukraine. The kirchen helfen.ch platform, working with approximately 100 local churches, facilitated housing for more than 1,000 Ukrainian refugees across Switzerland.

When many people opened their doors and offered private accommodation, this has now proven to be valuable.

That statement came from the Swiss Evangelical Alliance in response to the Federal Council's conclusions.

The Federal Council suggested that private hosting arrangements may strengthen public acceptance of refugees and enhance broader social cohesion in Swiss communities. However, the report noted that the financial impacts remain unclear, as potential workforce integration savings could offset recruitment and support costs.

Approximately 30,000 Ukrainian refugees were registered in Switzerland during the early months of the war. That figure has since grown to roughly 68,000 Ukrainians holding S protection status in the country.

Beyond housing, Christian organizations in Switzerland delivered roughly 100 truckloads of humanitarian aid, totaling around 700 tons, into Ukraine itself. They also provided volunteer training focused on trauma informed care, particularly for vulnerable women and children displaced by the conflict.

The Crusader's Opinion

When war came knocking, it was Christians who opened their doors. Not the bureaucrats. Not the NGOs with their billion dollar budgets. Ordinary believers, working through 100 local churches, took strangers into their homes and fed them at their tables. Now the Swiss government itself admits what we already knew: the Body of Christ gets things done that governments cannot. This is what biblical hospitality looks like in action. I was a stranger and you took me in. Every nation on earth should take notes.
