Sweden Takes Christian Couple's Daughters Over Church Attendance and European Court Refuses to Help

Daniel and Bianca Samson, a Christian couple in Sweden, have lost their appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after nearly four years of forced separation from their two eldest daughters.

The ordeal began in late 2022 when Swedish authorities removed the girls from their home following an allegation by the eldest daughter that her parents would not allow makeup or phone ownership due to their faith.

A full investigation found no evidence of abuse. The eldest daughter later retracted her accusations entirely. Despite this, Swedish authorities refused to return the children.

Officials cited the family's practice of attending church three times a week as evidence of "religious extremism." The parents completed official parenting training and were certified as fit parents, yet the girls remain in separate foster homes.

The daughters are permitted to see their parents only once a month under supervised visitation. According to ADF International, which is representing the family, the girls have expressed their wish to return home and have experienced health problems while in foster care.

On March 10, 2026, the ECHR declared the case inadmissible, stating that Swedish legal remedies must be exhausted first. The decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Parents have the primary responsibility and right to raise their children. When the state interferes with family life based on values based parenting choices or discrimination on the basis of faith, fundamental freedoms are at stake.

Those are the words of ADF International's Guillermo A. Morales Sancho, who is representing the Samson family in their fight against the Swedish government.

European Court Abandons Christian Family Targeted by Sweden for Going to Church

The Samson case has drawn international attention as a stark example of religious discrimination in Western Europe. The family's practice of regular church attendance, something millions of Christians around the world consider normal, was treated by Swedish social services as dangerous extremism.

ADF International continues to support the family and is exploring further legal avenues within the Swedish court system to reunite the Samsons with their daughters.

The Crusader's Opinion

Going to church three times a week is "extremism" now? In Sweden, a country that bends over backwards to accommodate every other religion and ideology, a Christian family loses their children for doing what billions of believers have done for two thousand years. The daughter recanted. The investigation found nothing. And still, the state keeps these girls locked away in separate foster homes, sick and desperate to come home. This is not child protection. This is state sponsored persecution of Christians in the heart of Europe. If a Muslim family had their children taken for attending mosque, every human rights organization on earth would be burning down the doors of the Swedish parliament. But because they are Christians, the world looks away. The ECHR's refusal to even hear the case is a disgrace that should haunt every person who claims to care about religious freedom.
