Americans Trapped in Mexico After Cartel Leader El Mencho Killed in Military Raid
Mexican cartel leader Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes was killed in a U.S. intelligence aided Mexican military operation on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The raid took place in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico, and resulted in the deaths of over 70 people during the operation and the wave of violence that followed.
In the aftermath, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) erected more than 250 roadblocks across 20 states, using hijacked trucks, buses, and private vehicles set ablaze to obstruct roads. American tourists and residents across popular vacation destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara found themselves stranded with no way out.
Megan Phelps of Southern California witnessed "five or six fires along the Pacific coastline" from her location. Leslie Devaney, a San Diego resident visiting Puerto Vallarta, described a terrifying scene in which a person dressed in black clothing threw "a container with yellow liquid" into a vehicle, setting it ablaze.
I saw black plumes of smoke from across the city and charred vehicles left in the middle of the road.
Leslie Devaney's flight home was rebooked from Monday to Thursday as airlines suspended service to the region.
Yoni Pizer, a Puerto Vallarta resident, was driving to a whale watching excursion when a gunman approached their vehicle and ordered passengers out at gunpoint.
He threw an incendiary device or some sort of bomb in the car, which immediately exploded in flames.
Pizer recalled hearing explosions and gunfire as people were "dragged out of their cars" in the surrounding area. More than 1,000 visitors were stranded overnight at the Guadalajara Zoo as violence engulfed the city.
The U.S. Embassy initially urged American citizens to "shelter in place" in affected regions including Jalisco State, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon on February 22. By February 25, the shelter in place orders were lifted as public transportation and businesses resumed operations.
El Mencho Death Sparks Cartel Violence Across Mexico Leaving Tourists Stranded

The Mexican Defense Department confirmed the operation was conducted as part of bilateral coordination with the United States, whose authorities provided intelligence that contributed to locating Oseguera Cervantes. During the raid, CJNG gunmen opened fire as federal troops advanced, triggering an intense firefight in the mountainous terrain surrounding Tapalpa. A military helicopter providing aerial support was struck by gunfire and forced to make an emergency landing in nearby Sayula.
The Crusader's Opinion
While the world celebrates the death of one drug lord, let us not forget that the cartels are a spiritual plague born from the same lawlessness that thrives wherever God is absent. These criminal empires have murdered priests, kidnapped pastors, and terrorized Christian communities across Mexico and Central America for decades. El Mencho may be dead, but the serpent has many heads. The Western world cannot afford to look away while evil festers at our southern border. Our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout Latin America live under the constant shadow of cartel violence. We must pray for Mexico, but we must also demand that our leaders act decisively to protect the innocent and crush the infrastructure of evil that poisons both nations.
