Why Keir Starmer Is Telling Britain To Turn To Christian Faith This Easter

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer used his official Easter 2026 message to urge Britons to look to Christian faith for "reassurance and grounding" during what he described as a period of "real anxiety" across the country.

The message, released by Downing Street on 3 April 2026, praised churches and Christian communities for quietly supporting families, children and neighbours across the United Kingdom.

Easter is a celebration of hope, new life and renewal. Across the country, churches and Christian communities quietly and tirelessly support families, children and neighbours. It is precisely that spirit of service which exemplifies national renewal, and reflects the very heart of Christ's example.

Those words were delivered by the Prime Minister as conflicts abroad and economic pressures at home continue to weigh on British households.

Starmer acknowledged the current mood of the nation directly, pointing to wars overseas and uncertainty about the future as sources of widespread unease.

This Easter comes at a time of real anxiety for many people. In moments like these, faith offers reassurance and grounding, a reminder that we are not alone, and that hope can still take root even in difficult soil.

The Labour leader said his Government is committed to partnering with churches and other faith groups through programmes such as Pride in Place and Best Start Family Hubs.

He praised churches for being "rooted in their neighbourhoods" for generations, working to combat poverty, fear and isolation across local communities.

Starmer closed his message by wishing Christians across the United Kingdom and around the world a happy Easter filled with "peace, hope and the promise of new life."

Our country is at its best when we choose community over division, kindness over indifference, and service over self interest. I thank everyone who gives their time through churches and Christian charities.

The statement marks one of the most faith forward messages Starmer has released since becoming Prime Minister in July 2024.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let the record show that even a secular Labour Prime Minister has to admit what we already know: when the world is burning, people run to the Cross. Starmer is not wrong that Britain is anxious. Britain is anxious because Britain has spent sixty years dismantling the Christian scaffolding that held it together. You cannot strip a nation of Christ and then act surprised when the people feel lost. If he really means these words, let him defend British Christians who are arrested for silent prayer outside abortion clinics. Until then, it is just another Easter card from Number 10.

Take Action

  • Pray for Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the United Kingdom this Easter season, that leaders would genuinely seek Christ and not merely invoke Him for political cover.
  • Support persecuted and pressured Christians worldwide by donating to The Shepherd's Shield.
  • Give to Open Doors UK to stand with believers facing hostility at home and abroad.
  • Support Voice of the Martyrs to equip suffering Christians across the globe.
  • Contact your local MP and urge them to defend freedom of worship, freedom of prayer, and freedom of speech for British Christians. Find your MP at members.parliament.uk.
  • Attend an Easter service at your local church and invite a neighbour who may be struggling with the "real anxiety" Starmer described.
