Ryan Gosling Says Fatherhood Drove Him to Make 'Project Hail Mary' a Family Friendly Film

Actor Ryan Gosling has revealed that becoming a father was the driving force behind bringing Andy Weir's bestselling novel "Project Hail Mary" to the big screen as a family friendly film.

Gosling, who stars in and produced the science fiction adventure, told The Christian Post that making a movie the whole family could enjoy together was "very important" to him.

"It was very important for me. Eva and I look for films that we can go to with our whole family, and we find it hard to find."

The actor, who shares two daughters with partner Eva Mendes, explained that the scarcity of quality live action films suitable for all ages motivated him to champion the project after author Andy Weir gave him the opportunity.

"Project Hail Mary" premiered in London on March 9, 2026, at Cineworld Leicester Square, with a subsequent premiere in Paris on March 11. The film is set for wide release in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios on March 20, 2026.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the film also stars Sandra Huller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. It has earned a PG 13 rating from the Motion Picture Association for "some thematic material and suggestive references."

Critics have embraced the film enthusiastically. On Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of 136 critics' reviews are positive, with the consensus describing it as "a visually dazzling space odyssey that's carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning."

Reviewers have compared it favorably to classic Spielberg era family science fiction like "E.T." and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," calling it "a masterpiece of a family popcorn movie" with positive themes of friendship, cooperation, hope, and courage.

The film follows an astronaut who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory, tasked with saving Earth from an extinction level threat. It explores themes of survival, hope, ethics, and the power of unlikely friendships across species.

Content wise, the film features minimal profanity, no sexual content, and only brief mild sci fi violence, making it one of the rare big budget Hollywood productions genuinely suitable for family viewing.

The Crusader's Opinion

It is genuinely refreshing to see a major Hollywood star use his platform and influence to champion family friendly entertainment. In an industry that increasingly pushes boundaries for shock value, Gosling's deliberate choice to create something his own children can watch speaks volumes. Hollywood takes note when billion dollar franchises succeed without gratuitous content. We need more of this. Christians should support films that honor wholesome storytelling, because the marketplace listens to where we spend our money.
