Rick Warren Calls on Churches Worldwide to Unite for the Gospel Before 2033 Deadline

Pastor Rick Warren, founder of Saddleback Church and the Finishing The Task movement, has issued an urgent call for global church unity to ensure the gospel reaches every person by 2033, the 2,000th anniversary of the resurrection, the Great Commission, and Pentecost.

Speaking in an online conversation hosted by the World Evangelical Alliance on March 12, 2026, Warren warned that the widely promoted initiative known as "the gospel for everyone by 2033" risks becoming nothing more than a slogan without concrete action.

One of my greatest fears is that the phrase 'the gospel for everyone by 2033' will be just a slogan.

Warren, who previously spoke at the WEA's 14th General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea on October 27, 2025, outlined three levels of church collaboration: networking, cooperation, and sustained local partnerships. He pointed to a coalition of churches in Tijuana, Mexico, which grew from small pastor meetings to hundreds of congregations coordinating evangelization efforts as a model for what unity can achieve.

Unity is not uniformity. It takes all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people. The purpose of unity is evangelism.

Warren clarified that the goal is not that every person will become a Christian, but that everyone should have the opportunity to hear the message.

"We're not responsible for people's response," he said. "But we are responsible for sharing the good news so that everyone has the opportunity."

He also emphasized the role of digital technology, comparing its potential impact on global evangelism to the printing press during the Reformation. The WEA's 14th General Assembly in Seoul brought together 1,300 participants from 146 nations, including 931 international delegates from 124 member countries.

Warren's Bold 2033 Vision: Every Person on Earth Must Hear the Gospel

The 2033 date holds deep significance. Christ was crucified, rose from the dead, gave the Great Commission, ascended to heaven, and sent the Holy Spirit to start the Church all in 33 AD. On Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 2033, the Church will celebrate its 2,000th birthday.

Having a date makes you work faster. It gives you a goal. We count people because people count. Every number represents a soul.

Evangelical leaders across denominations and mission agencies have increasingly rallied around this timeline as a framework for collaboration. Warren urged pastors to move beyond conferences and invest in lasting partnerships at the local level.

Here is a man who understands what matters. Every day that passes without the gospel reaching someone is a day that soul stands in eternal danger. We have the technology, the resources, and the churches to make this happen. What we lack is the will. Too many denominations spend more time fighting each other than fighting for the lost. Warren is right: unity is not about agreeing on every doctrine. It is about recognizing that we serve the same risen King and the clock is ticking. Seven years until the 2,000th anniversary of the Church. Seven years to reach every unreached people group. If we cannot rally behind that, what can we rally behind?
