Pakistan Supreme Court Demands Justice for Jaranwala Christians as Thousands of Attackers Walk Free
Pakistan Supreme Court orders Jaranwala violence trial concluded in six months as less than eight percent of attackers face justice
Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Trial for Jaranwala Church Attackers to Conclude in Six Months
Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered a trial court to wrap up proceedings against those responsible for the devastating 2023 anti Christian attacks in Jaranwala within six months. The directive came on March 31, 2026, from a two judge bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
The court also ordered the immediate arrest of all absconding suspects connected to 22 cases stemming from the August 16, 2023 mob violence that destroyed at least 26 churches and over 100 Christian homes in the Faisalabad district of Punjab Province.
Punjab's Additional Prosecutor General Ahmad Raza Gilani urged the court to expedite proceedings in the special anti terrorism court handling the cases. The Punjab Provincial government had petitioned the Supreme Court to cancel bail for multiple suspects.
I am feeling ashamed that only 18 charge sheets were submitted in the case in the last six months.
Former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa made this sharp rebuke in February 2024, questioning Pakistan's commitment to protecting its religious minorities. He warned that law enforcement appeared reluctant to act against mob perpetrators.
The 2023 violence erupted after two Christians were falsely accused of desecrating the Quran. A trial court later acquitted both men, finding they had been framed following a personal dispute. Despite this exoneration, the Christian community of Jaranwala suffered catastrophic losses.
According to Amnesty International, of more than 5,200 individuals allegedly involved in the attacks, only 380 were arrested. Of those, 228 were released on bail and 77 had their charges dropped entirely. The vast majority of perpetrators remain free.
Open Doors ranked Pakistan eighth on its 2026 World Watch List for countries where Christianity is most difficult to practice.
Jaranwala Christians Still Waiting for Justice Nearly Three Years After Devastating Church Attacks

The scale of impunity surrounding the Jaranwala attacks remains staggering. Thousands of attackers were captured on video and identified by witnesses, yet fewer than eight percent were ever arrested. The Supreme Court's latest intervention signals growing frustration within Pakistan's judiciary over the glacial pace of accountability.
For the Christian families of Jaranwala, many of whom lost everything they owned, the court's six month deadline represents a fragile hope that justice may finally arrive.
The Crusader's Opinion
Let us be brutally honest about what happened in Jaranwala. Over 5,200 people stormed through a Christian neighborhood, burning 26 churches and 100 homes to the ground over a lie. A fabricated blasphemy accusation. The accused were acquitted because it was all made up. And yet, nearly three years later, less than eight percent of the attackers have even been arrested. Most of those walked free on bail. This is not justice delayed. This is justice denied. Imagine for one moment if Christians burned 26 mosques in any Western nation. The international outcry would shake governments. But when it happens to Christians in Pakistan, we get polite court orders and empty promises. Every church reduced to ashes in Jaranwala is a testimony to what happens when the world looks away from anti Christian violence.
