Vice President JD Vance Reveals New Memoir on His Journey From Atheism to the Catholic Church

Vice President JD Vance has announced a new memoir titled Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, set for release on June 16, 2026. The 304 page book, published by HarperCollins, will chronicle his deeply personal spiritual journey from evangelical Christianity through atheism and ultimately into the Catholic Church.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, shared the announcement on social media, saying he had been working on the book for years.

"I've been writing this book for a long time, and I'm honored to finally be able to share the full story with you all," Vance wrote. "Communion is about my personal journey and how I found my way back to faith."

The memoir explores what it means to be a Christian across all seasons of life, including childhood, young adulthood, marriage, fatherhood, and public leadership. Vance described the central question of the book as one of spiritual wandering.

"The story of how I regained my faith, of course, only happened because I had lost it to begin with. The interesting question that hangs over this book, and over my mind, is why I ever strayed from the path."

Vance grew up in an evangelical household in Appalachian Ohio before drifting away from faith during his time at Yale University and while working in the financial industry. He credits his eventual return to Christianity and his reception into the Catholic Church as a turning point that gave his life a foundation he had long been missing.

"To summarize this book: I'm a Christian, and I became a Christian because I believe that Jesus Christ's teachings are true."

Jonathan Burnham, president and publisher at HarperCollins, praised the work, saying it "will speak to so many searching for faith, connection, and meaning in their lives," and that Vance's "deeply heartfelt story of doubt and regained belief resonates far beyond politics."

Vance also expressed hope that his story would encourage others of all Christian traditions.

"By sharing my journey I might be helpful to others, Catholic, Protestant, or otherwise, who are seeking reconciliation with God."

JD Vance's 'Communion' Memoir Sparks Conversation on Faith, Politics, and 2028 Presidential Speculation

The announcement has fueled widespread speculation that Vance may be positioning himself for a 2028 presidential run. Publishing a memoir and launching a subsequent media tour is a well established playbook for presidential hopefuls. His previous book, Hillbilly Elegy, sold more than five million copies worldwide and launched his political career.

The book's cover has also drawn attention after observers noticed that the rural church depicted is actually Mount Zion Church in Elk Creek, Virginia, a United Methodist congregation, rather than a Catholic one. Neither Vance's office nor HarperCollins has commented on the discrepancy.

Vance, who is the nation's second Catholic vice president, has said he attends Mass roughly 95% of Sundays. In October 2025, he attended a private Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem during a diplomatic trip to Israel, where he also went to confession.

The Crusader's Opinion

This is a man who walked through the fires of doubt, emerged from the darkness of atheism, and found his way home to Christ. That takes courage. In an age when politicians run from their faith to win approval, JD Vance is writing an entire book about why he chose Jesus. We need more of this. Whether you are Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox, we should celebrate when a public figure stands before the world and declares that Christ's teachings are true. The forces of secularism want our leaders silent about God. Vance just refused to be silent. Good.
