Israel Blocks Cardinal Pizzaballa From Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday

For the first time in centuries, Israeli police prevented senior Catholic Church leaders from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass on March 29, 2026.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Father Francesco Ielpo, the Custos of the Holy Land, were stopped by Israeli officers while proceeding privately toward the church. The two were not part of any procession or ceremonial event, yet were compelled to turn back.

Israeli authorities cited security concerns, with President Isaac Herzog stating the decision was driven by the "continuous threat of missile attacks from the Iranian terror regime." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Pizzaballa was stopped "out of special concern for his safety" and insisted there "was no malicious intent whatsoever."

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemned the action as "clearly unreasonable and disproportionate" and called it a "serious departure from fundamental principles of reasonableness, freedom of worship."

I share the pain of the people of the Holy Land who meet in peace to celebrate their faith... they were blocked by Israeli police and denied that right in a clear denial of freedom of worship.

Archbishop Richard Moth, Archbishop of Westminster, spoke those words in response. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop Emeritus of Westminster, called the move "ill thought out, disproportionate and unacceptable."

Bishop Jim Curry, Lead Bishop for the Holy Land, added: "The events of today are deeply troubling. Restricting the right to freedom of worship calls into question the agreed Status Quo."

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the incident was "an offence not only to the faithful, but to any community that respects religious freedom." Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the blocking of Pizzaballa an "unjustified attack on religious freedom."

Holy Week Access Denied: Christians Barred From Holiest Church in Christendom

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Atallah Hanna condemned the police action, charging that it falls within "a deliberate, systemic plan aimed at changing Jerusalem and marginalizing Christian and Islamic and Palestinian life in the Holy City."

Cardinal Pizzaballa was ultimately forced to celebrate Mass at the Basilica of All Nations in Gethsemane instead. Following widespread international backlash, Netanyahu asked "relevant authorities" to allow the Cardinal to hold services "as he wishes." Early the following Monday, police approved a "limited prayer framework" for the church in consultation with the Latin Patriarchate.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and the U.S. State Department both "raised concerns" about the incident. Pope Leo XIV also addressed the situation from Rome.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let this sink in. The holiest site in all of Christianity, the very place where our Lord was crucified and rose from the dead, was sealed shut on Palm Sunday by a nation that claims to uphold religious freedom. A Cardinal of the Catholic Church was physically barred from entering Christ's tomb to celebrate the Mass. Not by ISIS. Not by the Taliban. By a country that receives billions in Western support and calls itself a friend of Christians. Ask yourself: if a single synagogue were blocked on Yom Kippur, what would the response look like? Every government on earth would be in emergency session. But when it happens to Christians, we get a polite reversal the next day and a claim of "no malicious intent." The double standard is glaring. Christians must stop accepting crumbs of tolerance at sites that are rightfully ours.
