India Made It a Crime to Choose Christ: Now the Supreme Court Must Decide
India Supreme Court Challenges Anti Conversion Laws Targeting Christians Across 12 States
Twelve Indian states have enacted anti conversion laws that criminalize what they call "forced" religious conversion. In practice, these laws are used to target Christians who share their faith or Hindus who freely choose to follow Christ.
The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) has filed a petition challenging the constitutional validity of these laws. The Supreme Court has now issued notices to all 12 states, demanding they justify legislation that critics say "incentivizes violence against religious minorities" and "creates a chilling atmosphere for the free exercise of religion."
The NCCI argues these laws "encourage vigilantism" and are "disproportionately applied to religious minorities." Hindu nationalist mobs have used these laws as cover to attack pastors, disrupt prayer meetings, and harass Christian families with impunity.
Anti Conversion Laws Weaponized Against Indian Christians and Religious Minorities

The outcome of this case could have profound implications for millions of people, both in India and around the world. Rev. Dr. Richard Howell, founder of the Caleb Institute and a leader in the Evangelical Fellowship of India, has been among those documenting the systematic abuse of these laws against believers.
The Crusader's Opinion
Call them what they are: anti Christian laws. In no other country would the state criminalize a person for freely choosing their faith. These laws give mobs license to attack pastors and families under the guise of "preventing conversion." India claims to be the world's largest democracy, but democracy means nothing when millions are denied the most basic freedom: the right to believe. The Supreme Court has an opportunity to correct this injustice. The world is watching.
