Jerusalem Holy Week Cancelled: Church of the Holy Sepulchre Closed as War Rages in the Middle East

The traditional Palm Sunday procession in Jerusalem has been cancelled for the first time due to war, as the escalating conflict in the Middle East forces unprecedented disruptions to Christian Easter celebrations in the Holy City.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, confirmed that the iconic procession from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem will not take place this year. Instead, it will be replaced by a moment of prayer for the city at a location yet to be determined.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the traditional site of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, has been closed for several weeks after Israeli authorities ordered its shutdown on February 28, 2026, citing security concerns. Fragments from intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles fell within a few hundred meters of the historic sanctuary on March 12, injuring at least one person.

The harshness of this time of war, which affects us all, today bears the added burden of not being able to celebrate Easter together and with dignity.

Cardinal Pizzaballa described the Holy Sepulchre as "the beating heart of our faith" and warned that "restrictions imposed by the conflict do not bode well for any imminent improvement."

The Chrism Mass of Holy Thursday, usually held in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, has been postponed indefinitely. Other key Easter celebrations at the church remain in doubt, with the Patriarchate forced to organize events day by day as the situation evolves.

Despite the cancellations, Cardinal Pizzaballa urged believers to observe Easter through prayer and designated March 28 as a special day of prayer for peace, encouraging the faithful worldwide to recite the Rosary for peace and serenity.

Easter, which we celebrate in the name of Christ's passion, death, and resurrection, reminds us that no darkness, not even that of war, can have the last word. The empty tomb is the seal of the victory of life over hatred, of mercy over sin.

The closure is reported to be one of the longest continuous shutdowns in the church's 1,700 year history. While it closed briefly during protests in 2018 and the pandemic in 2020, an indefinite closure due to regional warfare is described by church officials as "unprecedented."

Israeli authorities have also restricted Palestinian Christians' access to Jerusalem, issuing only 4,000 permits last year for Easter events, while Jewish Passover attendees faced no such obstacles.

The Franciscan friars present at the Holy Sepulchre continue to carry out daily processions and liturgical prayers according to the Status Quo, though access to the Basilica remains restricted. Patriarchate churches across the region remain open, with parish priests doing their best to encourage the participation of the faithful in Easter celebrations despite the extraordinary circumstances.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let this sink in. The holiest site in all of Christendom, the very place where our Lord conquered death, is locked shut because of war. Christians cannot walk the path Jesus walked on Palm Sunday. They cannot gather at His tomb on Easter. This is not some far off theological debate. This is real. This is happening right now.

While the world obsesses over political posturing, the beating heart of the Christian faith sits behind locked doors. Ask yourself: if the holiest mosque in Islam were closed for weeks by a non Muslim government, would the world stay silent? The hypocrisy is deafening.

Cardinal Pizzaballa is right: no darkness, not even war, can have the last word. But we must not sit idle while the cradle of our faith is held hostage. Pray, yes. But also speak. Loudly.
