Hillsong IMPLODES: Russia Becomes Latest to Abandon Scandal Ridden Celebrity Church
Hillsong's Global Empire Crumbles as Russian Church Abandons Scandal Plagued Megachurch

Hillsong Church Loses Russian Congregation as Global Network Continues Collapse

The global charismatic megachurch Hillsong has lost another church in its network, this time in Russia, leaving just one remaining congregation in the country.

Senior pastors Gino and Vera Kasevich recently renamed their Moscow and St Petersburg campuses to "Legacy" in English, scrubbing all mention of Hillsong from their website and changing legal paperwork as of November 13, 2025.

"We have been reflecting and praying about how we can honor our history while focusing on what God still has in store for us and sharing our faith with the future generations," the founding pastors wrote in a joint statement to The Roys Report.

The couple acknowledged the last few years "have been challenging" but stopped short of directly attributing those challenges to Hillsong's global scandals.

Celebrity Christianity Collapses Under Weight of Scandal

Founded in suburban Sydney, Australia in 1983 by Brian and Bobbie Houston, Hillsong grew to attract millions of worshippers worldwide, including numerous A list celebrities. The church became famous for publishing Christian worship albums and hosting massive charismatic worship events in cities like London.

But the empire has crumbled following allegations of financial misuse, exploitation of volunteers, and sexual abuse.

Contact information has changed, legal documents reveal a complete constitutional overhaul, and the church's identity has been stripped of any Hillsong branding.

"Indeed, it was a turbulent and transitional season in the life of the church," the Kaseviches continued. "Together with our leadership team, we have been reflecting on our identity. Over the past year, we have been preaching about the foundation of our faith."

Last year, Hillsong announced that US campuses had dropped to just five. The Russian departure marks another step in the megachurch's global disintegration.

THE CRUSADER'S OPINION

This is what happens when you build on celebrity instead of Christ.

When you prioritize fog machines over the fear of God.

When you turn worship into entertainment and volunteers into unpaid labor.

Hillsong became the poster child for everything wrong with modern megachurch culture.

Financial misuse. Sexual abuse. Volunteer exploitation.

All while selling millions of worship albums and hosting arena events.

Russia just became the latest to say enough.

Five US campuses left. One Russian church remaining. The empire is collapsing.

And the body of Christ is better for it.

Celebrity Christianity produces celebrity scandals.

Entertainment driven worship produces shallow disciples.

When you build on hype instead of holiness, eventually the foundation cracks.

This isn't a tragedy. This is accountability.

The question is whether the broader church will learn the lesson or just rebrand the same compromised model.
