Hegseth Admits Iran War Has Religious Dimension as Eschatology Debate Intensifies

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth acknowledged during an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes Overtime" that aired Sunday that the war in Iran carries a religious element, a statement that has intensified debate over the role of eschatology in the ongoing conflict.

When CBS News' chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett asked Hegseth if he "views any of this in a religious context," the Secretary pivoted first to Islam.

"Obviously, we're fighting religious fanatics who seek a nuclear capability in order for some religious Armageddon."

Hegseth went on to note that Christian faith "and faith in general" is important to President Donald Trump and that service members facing danger must be grounded in their beliefs.

"They need a connection with their almighty God in these moments, and I pray for them every day."

The comments come amid mounting concerns over the intersection of Christian eschatology and U.S. military operations. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has received complaints alleging that military commanders are calling the war on Iran "biblically sanctioned" and framing it as a path to the end times. Some soldiers have reportedly been told that Trump was "anointed by Jesus" to trigger Armageddon in Iran. The Pentagon declined to comment on these allegations.

Hegseth has acknowledged that Iran's leadership follows Twelver Shia Islam eschatology, which anticipates the return of the Mahdi to restore justice at the end of days. He characterized this belief system as motivation for Tehran's nuclear pursuits.

Hegseth's Eschatology Views and the Iran War Religious Debate Explained

A resurfaced 2018 speech showed Hegseth expressing optimism about rebuilding the Third Temple on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, stating there is "no reason why the miracle of re establishing the temple is not possible." Christian theology has historically debated whether a rebuilt temple signals the arrival of the Antichrist.

Tucker Carlson has questioned whether Hegseth's eschatological views are influencing U.S. foreign policy, noting that such theology is not standard teaching. Senator Lindsey Graham has characterized the conflict as fundamentally religious. Most scholars in Hegseth's CREC denomination hold postmillennial eschatological views.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let's be clear about something: Iran's regime has openly called for the destruction of Israel and the West for decades. They fund terror, they persecute Christians and religious minorities within their own borders, and they pursue nuclear weapons while chanting "Death to America." Hegseth is right that we are dealing with religious fanatics. But the answer to fanaticism is not more fanaticism. The answer is the truth of the Gospel, the strength of Christendom united, and unwavering resolve. We must support our troops, pray for wisdom among our leaders, and demand that this conflict serves justice, not ideology. The Persian people are not our enemy. The regime that imprisons pastors and executes converts is.
