Drug Mule Who Couldn't Read Taught Himself From a Prison Bible — Now He's Transforming Cape Town
Former drug mule Shepherd Pani taught himself to read using the Bible in prison. Now a barista at Gangstar Cafe, his story is told in Never Beyond Hope.
Former Drug Mule Shepherd Pani Finds Redemption Through the Gospel and Becomes a Barista in Cape Town
Shepherd Pani, a former drug mule and prisoner from Cape Town, South Africa, has undergone a radical transformation through the power of the Gospel. His story is now the subject of a new book, Never Beyond Hope, co authored by Jemimah Wright, deputy editor of Premier's Woman Alive magazine, and published by Authentic Media on 13 March 2026.
Pani grew up in Samora, Cape Town, where he became entangled in gang life, theft, and drug trafficking from a young age. He was eventually arrested for possession of a firearm and sentenced to prison. During his time behind bars, Pani could not read or write.
It was in prison that everything changed. Pani taught himself to read using the Bible, a feat Wright attributes to the work of the Holy Spirit. Nine months into his sentence, he made critical life decisions that altered the course of his future entirely.
His story shows that Jesus works. No one is too far from redemption. Jesus stands with arms wide open.
Jemimah Wright told Christian Today.
Upon his release, Pani contacted The Message Trust, an NGO focused on breaking the cycle of poverty and providing mentorship and job opportunities to at risk young men in Cape Town. The organisation employed him at Gangstar Cafe in Mowbray, Cape Town, where he trained as a barista and began building a new life.
Wright first heard about Pani through Jeremiah Coffman, a volunteer with The Message Trust, and later met him in person at the Gangstar Cafe. She immediately recognised the significance of his story.
When men dream, they dream for themselves, but when the vision is from God, it's for the benefit of others.
Wright said of Pani's journey.
Pani's long term vision is to set up a community programme to mentor and provide opportunities for young people in the township where he lives. His story serves as a testament to the transformative power of faith, even in the most hopeless circumstances.
How a Cape Town Drug Trafficker Found Christ in Prison and Built a New Life

The book Never Beyond Hope aims to provide hope to anyone who feels they have gone too far or done too much wrong. Wright emphasised that Pani's transformation demonstrates the Gospel's ability to reach even the most hardened individuals.
The work aims to provide hope in who God is, and the truth that no life is beyond hope.
Wright shared.
Gangstar Cafe, born out of The Message Trust South Africa, has helped over 25 former offenders transition into employment. All staff at the cafe are former prisoners who have made the decision to change their ways. The cafe has locations in Mowbray and Durbanville, Cape Town.
The Crusader's Opinion
This is the Gospel at work. Not a watered down, feel good version of Christianity that the world tries to sell us, but the real, life altering, chain breaking power of Jesus Christ. Shepherd Pani was a drug mule, a gang member, a prisoner who could not even read. The world had written him off. Society had written him off. But God never writes anyone off.
Let this story be a rebuke to every secularist who claims the Church is irrelevant. While governments pour billions into failed rehabilitation programmes, a man picked up a Bible in a prison cell and it changed everything. The Gospel does what no government programme ever could. We need more of this, not less.
