Christian Institute Sends Book to Every UK MP Highlighting How Faith Shaped Democracy and Justice

The Christian Institute has sent copies of Dr Sharon James's book How Christianity Transformed the World to parliamentarians across the United Kingdom ahead of Easter 2026.

Members of Parliament in Westminster, Holyrood, Cardiff Bay, and Stormont all received the book, which details how Christians motivated by their faith have shaped education, healthcare, justice, and human dignity throughout history.

Dr James, Social Policy Analyst at The Christian Institute, said she was "absolutely delighted" they were able to send the book to elected representatives.

"Without the impact of Christians following the teachings of Christ in the public square, the world would be less just, less free, less educated, more cruel, and more poor."

She also noted a "renewed interest" in Christianity in the country and urged believers to pray for their parliamentary representatives and invite them to church this Easter.

The Institute's Director, Ciarán Kelly, sent a letter alongside the book, writing:

"As Easter approaches, please accept this small gift as a mark of our appreciation for your contribution to public service."

Kelly acknowledged that parliamentarians have been serving the nation at a time when it is common to question both its heritage and its future.

The initiative comes at what many observers call an all time low for Christian influence in British politics. For the first time, Britain has an openly atheist prime minister and an agnostic leader of the opposition. The gesture harks back to former prime minister Tony Blair's era, when his press secretary Alastair Campbell famously declared, "We don't do God."

Despite this, several prominent politicians have spoken openly about faith in recent years. Former Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron stepped down in 2017 over tensions between his Christian beliefs and political expectations. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has identified himself as an Anglican. Restore Britain's Rupert Lowe has also been vocal about his faith.

Dr James's book has been compared to Tom Holland's bestseller Dominion for its evangelical perspective on Christianity's civilizational impact. She noted that there exists "a huge religious literacy gap" in British public life today.

The book covers topics including freedom, religious liberty, justice, the protection of life, the dignity of women, philanthropy, healthcare, education, and the value of work, tracing how each of these blessings has spread alongside the Gospel throughout history.

Good on The Christian Institute. While the political class stumbles around pretending that Britain built itself on secularism and "shared values," someone had the courage to send them a history lesson. This nation was forged in the fires of Christian conviction. Every hospital, every school, every legal protection you enjoy traces back to men and women who followed Christ into the public square.

Britain now has an atheist prime minister and an agnostic opposition leader, and somehow we are supposed to believe that is progress. Progress toward what, exactly? The world is watching as the nation that once sent missionaries to every continent now cannot even remember who built its own civilization. Read the book, MPs.
