Canada Wants to Euthanize the Mentally Ill and Evangelicals Are Fighting to Stop It

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) is urging the Canadian Parliament to permanently block the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to include mental illness as a sole qualifying condition. Unless lawmakers act, Canadians suffering from mental illness alone could become eligible for assisted death as early as March 2027.

The EFC warns that the current law allowing MAiD for mental illness comes with no additional safeguards, putting vulnerable Canadians at risk. In a statement, the organization declared that "Canadians know that those struggling with mental illness need care, support, and hope, not an assisted death."

Conservative Member of Parliament Tamara Jansen introduced Bill C 218 in June 2025 to stop the expansion. The bill would amend the Criminal Code to ensure that a mental disorder is not considered a "grievous and irremediable medical condition" for MAiD purposes. A debate and vote on the bill is scheduled for mid April 2026.

The province of Alberta has also announced its own legislation to prevent MAiD expansion for mental illness within its borders. In January 2025, the EFC submitted a formal brief to Parliament calling for the repeal of "Track 2" MAiD provisions and a complete halt to any further expansion.

The law allowing MAiD for mental illness doesn't come with any additional safeguards.

Currently, 1 in 10 Canadians wait more than five months just to access counselling services. The EFC argues that expanding assisted death while failing to provide adequate mental health care is a grave injustice. Under the existing "Track 2" provisions, only a 90 day assessment period is required before a patient could receive MAiD.

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has also called on Canada to halt the proposed expansions, citing concerns about disability rights and the protection of vulnerable populations.

The upcoming vote on Bill C 218 is being watched closely by faith communities across Canada. The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, which represents millions of evangelical Christians nationwide, has made this one of its top policy priorities. The organization has consistently argued that Canada's MAiD laws "fundamentally devalue human life" and normalize suicide rather than investing in mental health resources and support.

The Crusader's Opinion

Canada is offering death to the depressed instead of offering them hope. Let that sink in. A nation that cannot get a suicidal person into counselling within five months wants to offer them a lethal injection within 90 days. This is not compassion. This is industrialized despair dressed up as dignity. The same government that lectures the world on human rights is preparing to execute its own mentally ill citizens with a white coat and a clipboard. Every Christian in Canada must stand up now and demand that Bill C 218 passes. When a society offers death as treatment, that society has lost its soul.
