Britain's New 'Blasphemy Law' Could Cost Thousands Their Jobs as Free Speech Union Fights Back
Free Speech Union launches legal challenge against UK anti Muslim hostility definition, warning it could silence Christians and cost tens of thousands their jobs.
Free Speech Union Takes UK Government to Court Over Definition That Could Silence Christians
The Free Speech Union has announced a legal challenge against the UK Government's new definition of "anti Muslim hostility," warning it amounts to a "Muslim blasphemy law via the back door."
Lord Young of Acton, the Free Speech Union's director, called the definition "the most serious threat to free speech the Government has come up with so far." He warned that tens of thousands of people a year could lose their jobs under the vague and subjective language of the new policy.
The legal challenge will be pursued through judicial review, contesting the definition's broad language and arguing it duplicates existing legislation already enforced by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Christians and other faith groups have spoken out against the definition, raising alarm that it would grant Muslims special protections not extended to other religious communities. The Free Speech Union argues the definition would make it "difficult to refer to Muslims doing anything wrong," effectively shielding extremists from legitimate criticism.
The definition describes anti Muslim hostility as "intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts that are directed at Muslims because of their religion," and extends to cover "the prejudicial stereotyping of Muslims, and treating them as a collective group defined by fixed and negative characteristics."
This is the most serious threat to free speech the Government has come up with so far.

Estimates suggest the new framework could generate approximately 20,000 reports of "anti Muslim hostility" each year, a dramatic increase from the roughly 4,000 recorded anti Muslim hate crimes currently reported annually. The Government has also appointed an "anti Muslim hostility tsar" to oversee how the definition is applied.
The legal challenge also raises concerns about the composition of the working group that developed the definition. Four of its five members reportedly already supported defining Islamophobia before their appointment, according to Free Speech Union research.
UK Christians Fear Blasphemy Law Will Criminalize Religious Debate and Free Expression

In one alarming example, school councils have reportedly advised against children drawing pictures of Jesus to avoid offending Muslim students. Christian author Adrian Hilton described this as "sharia censorship" becoming "official in English state schools."
The Free Speech Union has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund the judicial review, which could force Communities Secretary Steve Reed to defend the policy in court. The case is expected to set a significant precedent for the future boundaries of free speech protections in the United Kingdom.
The Crusader's Opinion
Let me be absolutely clear about what is happening here. The British Government is creating a legal framework that will silence Christians while giving Islam a protected status above every other faith. If a Christian in Pakistan draws a picture of Muhammad, they face the death penalty under blasphemy laws. Now, in England, children cannot even draw pictures of Jesus in their own schools because it might offend Muslims. The hypocrisy is staggering.
This is not about protecting anyone from hatred. Existing laws already do that. This is about creating a special class of protection that elevates one religion above all others in a historically Christian nation. When Christian teachers can be sacked for saying Britain is a Christian country, but criticizing Christianity carries no consequences whatsoever, we have abandoned justice entirely. The West is sleepwalking into surrendering the very freedoms that made it great. Thank God for the Free Speech Union. Every believer must stand behind this fight.
