Bethel Church Exposed: Former Student Breaks Silence on Shawn Bolz Fake Prophecy Scandal and Years of Cover Up
Bethel alumnus reflects on the Shawn Bolz prophecy fraud scandal, spiritual abuse, and calls for accountability across the charismatic Christian movement.
Bethel Church Scandal: Former Student Speaks Out on Shawn Bolz Fraud and the Future of Charismatic Christianity
Brandon Showalter, an alumnus of Bethel School of Ministry and opinion writer at The Christian Post, has penned a deeply personal reflection on the ongoing fallout from the Shawn Bolz scandal that has rocked Bethel Church in Redding, California.
Earlier this year, Bethel leadership publicly repented for their handling of Bolz, a once celebrated charismatic prophet who was exposed for data mining social media to fabricate supernatural prophecies. The revelations came through a nearly six hour YouTube exposé by Christian apologist Mike Winger, which detailed not only the fraudulent prophecies but also allegations of sexual misconduct.
Bethel acknowledged they had shown what they called "unsanctified mercy" by continuing to platform Bolz despite documented evidence of fraud and alleged sexual impropriety. Church leaders admitted they should have alerted their congregation and the wider Christian community as early as 2020.
Bethel leadership stated they take full responsibility for failing to protect those under their care and for not acting sooner on the allegations against Bolz.
Showalter's reflection strikes a nuanced tone. Despite the scandal, he highlighted genuinely positive elements from his time at Bethel, including substantive biblical teaching under instructors like Dann Farrelly, who used Baptist theology textbooks and emphasized scriptural foundations. He also credited men's groups and mentorship for authentic spiritual transformation.
Yet the former student did not shy away from the difficult truth: that spiritual authority figures had abused positions of trust, leaving deep wounds often described as "church hurt."
Bethel Alum Calls for Accountability and Spiritual Purification Across Charismatic Movement

Showalter concluded his reflection by invoking Malachi 3:2, which describes God as "a refiner's fire," purifying His church through seasons of painful but necessary exposure. He advocated for continued repentance and spiritual cleansing across Christianity, believing that institutional accountability ultimately serves the spiritual health of all believers.
The broader question now facing the charismatic movement is whether this moment of reckoning will produce lasting reform or simply fade from memory. Multiple European church leaders have also come forward with evidence that Bolz used social media to fabricate words of knowledge, suggesting the scope of the deception extended far beyond Redding.
The Crusader's Opinion
This is what happens when accountability takes a back seat to celebrity culture inside the church. The charismatic movement has incredible potential to draw people to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit, but that very power makes it a magnet for frauds, manipulators, and wolves in sheep's clothing. Bethel waited years to act on what they knew. Years. How many souls were damaged in the meantime? How many left the faith entirely because they trusted a man who was running a con under the banner of prophecy? The church owes its people better than "unsanctified mercy" for predators. We owe them the truth, delivered swiftly and without compromise. If we cannot police our own house, the world will be more than happy to do it for us.
