Syrian Christians Forced to Cancel Easter After Armed Mob Destroys Virgin Mary Shrine and Terrorizes Town

Armed gunmen on motorcycles stormed the predominantly Christian town of Suqaylabiyah in Syria's Hama province on the night of March 28, 2026, destroying a shrine to the Virgin Mary, riddling a statue with bullets, smashing cars, and looting shops as terrified residents hid inside their homes.

The violence erupted after two Muslim men from the nearby town of Qalaat al Madiq allegedly harassed Christian women in Suqaylabiyah. When local Christian men confronted them, the two returned with dozens of armed men who launched a hourslong assault on the Christian community.

In the aftermath, the Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Syriac Orthodox churches jointly announced the cancellation of all outdoor Easter celebrations across Syria. The Greek Orthodox and Catholic patriarchs issued a joint statement declaring that Easter this year will be celebrated "only with prayer inside the churches."

We call upon Syrians from all components to remain united and reject sectarianism and division, and we call upon the Syrian government to launch a serious national dialogue initiative.

Syrian Christians for Peace said in a public statement.

Syrian government forces were eventually able to restore order after bringing reinforcements into the town. Hundreds of residents marched through the streets demanding accountability and declaring a strike until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Mervyn Thomas, founder president of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, responded to the attack by urging the Syrian authorities to take action.

We encourage the Syrian authorities to increase their efforts to combat extremism and hate speech, and hold all involved in the attacks to account.

Syria's Christian population has plummeted from an estimated 2.5 million before the civil war to fewer than 300,000 today, making the community more vulnerable than ever to sectarian violence. This latest attack marks the most severe incident targeting Christians since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.

Syrian Christians traditionally celebrate Easter with bands marching in the streets, egg hunts, and outdoor events for children. This year, none of that will take place. The cancellation represents a devastating blow to a community already reeling from over a decade of war and displacement.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let me be blunt. Armed men on motorcycles rode into a Christian town, shot up a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, terrorized women and children, looted shops, and destroyed property. And the world barely notices. Imagine for one second if Christians had done this to a mosque. Every news network on earth would run it for a month. The UN would convene an emergency session. Sanctions would follow.

But when it happens to Christians? Silence. Syria's Christian population has been decimated from 2.5 million to fewer than 300,000, and still the persecution continues. Easter itself, the holiest celebration in all of Christendom, has been stolen from these faithful believers at gunpoint. This is not a political dispute. This is evil. And evil must be named, confronted, and defeated.
