62% of Brits Say Unborn Babies With Heartbeats Deserve Legal Protection
A new UK survey of 2,800 people finds 62% believe unborn babies with detectable heartbeats should be legally protected from abortion.
UK Poll Shows 62% Want Legal Protection for Unborn Babies With Detectable Heartbeats
A major new survey has revealed that a clear majority of British people believe unborn babies with detectable heartbeats should receive legal protection.
The Centre for Bio Ethical Reform UK (CBR UK) conducted its "Heartbeat Campaign" between March and May 2025, surveying over 2,800 people across a dozen towns and cities in the United Kingdom.
In the first poll, which gathered responses from 1,546 participants, 62% answered "yes" when asked: "If a baby has a heartbeat, should their life be protected?"
A second poll of 1,328 respondents found that 59% opposed allowing the killing of babies in the womb with detectable heartbeats, outside of what the organisation described as "extreme circumstances."
The presence of a heartbeat is widely recognised as a key indicator of life and should therefore carry legal significance.
CBR UK spokesperson Ruth Rawlins said the results demonstrate growing public support for stronger legal protections for the unborn. The organisation argues that a baby's heart begins beating just 22 days after fertilisation.
CBR UK cited statistics showing over 250,000 abortions take place annually in the United Kingdom, with many occurring after a heartbeat can be detected.
The organisation is now backing a parliamentary petition calling for a "Heartbeat Bill," which is currently live on the UK Parliament website. The proposed legislation would establish legal protections for unborn babies once a heartbeat becomes detectable.
The UK government has not indicated any plans to introduce such legislation. The campaign comes amid ongoing parliamentary debate regarding abortion reform, including a recent vote by MPs on a bill that would effectively decriminalise abortion up to birth.
British Majority Backs Heartbeat Protection for Unborn Children in New Survey

The March for Life UK 2025 was the largest in its history, with over 10,000 pro life advocates gathering in London in a peaceful demonstration of support for the unborn and their parents. The growing movement shows that despite political reluctance, public sentiment is shifting toward recognising the rights of the unborn.
The Heartbeat Bill petition needs 100,000 signatures to trigger a debate in Parliament. CBR UK has released street interview footage showing members of the public discussing whether intentionally stopping a beating heart should be considered taking a life.
The Crusader's Opinion
When 62% of ordinary British citizens say a beating heart deserves protection, and Parliament still refuses to act, you know something is deeply broken. Over 250,000 unborn lives are ended every year in the UK alone. Each one had a heartbeat. Each one had unique DNA. Each one was a human being made in the image of God. While MPs debate decriminalising abortion up to birth, the people of Britain are saying "enough." The hypocrisy is staggering: we protect the eggs of endangered birds by law, but we will not protect a child with a beating heart. This is not a political issue. This is a moral crisis, and silence is complicity.
