185 Unelected Lords Just Legalised Killing Babies Up to Birth While 89% of Britain Says No
House of Lords votes 185 to 148 to retain abortion up to birth clause in Crime and Policing Bill despite 89% public opposition
UK House of Lords Votes to Allow Abortion Up to Birth in Landmark Decision
The House of Lords has voted to retain a controversial clause in the Crime and Policing Bill that effectively decriminalises abortion up to the point of birth in England and Wales.
On 18 March 2026, Baroness Monckton's amendment to remove Clause 208 from the Bill was defeated by 185 votes to 148. A second amendment by Baroness Stroud, which sought to reinstate mandatory in person consultations before a home abortion, was also rejected by 191 votes to 119.
Clause 208, originally introduced by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi in the House of Commons, removes criminal sanctions for women who perform their own abortions beyond the current 24 week legal limit.
Simon Calvert, deputy director of the Christian Institute, condemned the vote.
It is unutterably grim that the House of Lords has voted to permit a woman to take the life of her baby just days before birth.
Peter Lynas, UK Director of the Evangelical Alliance, called the results "sad news" and warned that the pills by post abortion service lacks "a crucial safeguard for women's safety."
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, spoke against the measure during the debate, stating that "all life is precious" and warning that the clause "risks eroding the safeguards and enforcements of those legal limits."
Polling data shows that only 1% of UK adults support abortion up to birth, while 89% of the general population oppose it. A further 91% of women support explicit bans on gender selective abortion.
Critics of the clause have also raised concerns that the change will increase late term home abortions, endanger women's health, and make it easier for abusers to covertly administer abortion drugs. They cited the case of Stuart Worby, who was convicted of secretly giving his partner abortion pills.
The House of Lords also adopted an amendment to pardon women who currently have police records or have been subjected to investigations and prosecutions for ending their own pregnancies.
House of Lords Rejects Pro Life Amendments on Late Term Abortion Bill

The Bill will now continue its passage through Parliament. Pro life organisations including SPUC, Right to Life UK, and the Christian Institute have vowed to continue opposing the measure and are calling on supporters to contact their representatives.
The Crusader's Opinion
Let the numbers speak. Only 1% of the British public supports abortion up to birth. One percent. And yet 185 unelected Lords just voted to make it legal. This is not democracy. This is an institution imposing the most extreme abortion regime in the developed world against the will of the people it claims to serve.
A nation that legalises the killing of a fully formed child days before natural birth has lost its moral compass entirely. The Archbishop of Canterbury stood up and said "all life is precious," and the Lords voted to prove they disagree. Every Christian in Britain should be asking: if 89% of the country opposes this, who exactly are these lawmakers representing?
